Gate News message, April 17 — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on April 16 during his visit to Malaysia that the Australian government has secured approximately 570,000 barrels of diesel from Brunei and South Korea. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia will prioritize supplying oil to Australia while ensuring sufficient domestic fuel supply.
Albanese said at a press conference in Malaysia that this is the first batch of strategic materials secured following new authorization for the Australian government to purchase and stockpile fuel, fertilizers, and critical minerals on international markets. Parliament recently passed legislation granting the government these procurement powers. Albanese’s Southeast Asia tour aims to strengthen energy cooperation; he has already visited Singapore and Brunei, with Malaysia as his third stop.
