On July 27, China's Commerce Ministry spokesperson responded to U.S. plans to investigate Chinese AI companies for allegedly distilling American advanced models and potentially imposing sanctions, stating the move lacks factual and legal basis. The spokesperson called it a typical example of artificial intelligence hegemoniasm. China noted that some of its AI models are now leading-edge, and pointed to over 200 U.S. startups urging the government not to cut off access to Chinese open-source models. China's Commerce Ministry urged the U.S. to cease threats and said it would take all necessary measures to protect its rights if the U.S. proceeds.
