U.S. Dollar Strengthens to 1,496.70 Won Overnight as Trump Revives Iran Sanctions, Waller Signals Hawkish Stance

According to Yonhapinfomax, the U.S. dollar strengthened against the Korean won overnight on July 13-14 (Korean time) to 1,496.70 won, down 4.70 won from Seoul's daytime close at 1,501.40 won on July 13. The rally was driven by two major developments: President Donald Trump announced renewed enforcement of maritime sanctions against Iran, stating the U.S. would collect compensation equivalent to 20% of all cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Simultaneously, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled a hawkish policy stance, stating that if core inflation remains elevated in the latest data, the FOMC should consider tightening monetary policy soon. The announcements pushed the USD-KRW pair toward 1,497 won, while crude oil prices climbed 6% to $75-76 per barrel for August delivery.
