South Korea Must Develop Its Own Advanced AI Models, Minister Says on July 20

According to Guru Club, South Korea's Science and Technology Minister Bae Kyung-hoon announced on July 20 that advanced artificial intelligence models could become geopolitical assets comparable to nuclear weapons, underscoring the country's need to independently develop its own frontier AI systems. Bae emphasized that frontier-level AI models are increasingly acquiring strategic attributes similar to nuclear weapons, with some nations seeking to control such top-tier AI systems more intensely. He stated that South Korea must pursue self-developed advanced AI models to build globally competitive artificial intelligence capabilities. The minister added that the government is formulating specialized plans and coordinating relevant departments to achieve this goal.
