OpenAI Faked Ability to Search ChatGPT Logs, Concealed Data for Two Years, NYT Says

According to a sanctions motion filed Thursday by The New York Times and other news organizations, OpenAI concealed evidence and misled the court for two years about its technical ability to search ChatGPT logs. During an April deposition, OpenAI privacy engineer Vincent Monaco inadvertently revealed that the company had actually conducted such searches prior to litigation, despite claiming it lacked the capability. The news organizations allege that OpenAI's concealment withheld relevant evidence, prolonged discovery, and inflated expenses.

OpenAI disputed the allegations, stating that the lawsuit is weakening and that news plaintiffs are attempting to invade user privacy. "As the Times' case weakens and they've been forced to drop claims against us, they're persisting with their efforts to invade the privacy of people who have nothing to do with this case," an OpenAI spokesperson said.
