According to Agence France-Presse, Microsoft's greenhouse gas emissions rose 27% to 21.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, driven by AI infrastructure expansion. Emissions intensity increased to 75.0 metric tons per US$1 million of revenue from 68.1, while Scope 2 market-based emissions jumped to 2.7 million metric tons from 259,090 after Microsoft discontinued purchasing spot energy attribute certificates and carbon removal credits in February 2025.
Water consumption increased 22% to 8,170 megaliters, moving the company further from its 2030 targets to achieve carbon negativity and replenish more water than it consumes.
