Germany Plans Naval Deployment to Strait of Hormuz for Shipping Security

GateNews

Gate News message, April 20 — Germany is planning to deploy naval forces to the Strait of Hormuz to ensure shipping security, according to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in an interview with German public television on April 19. Pistorius said the country is undertaking “concrete planning” around the possible deployment and will determine “potential partners and operational framework.”

Pistorius emphasized that a final decision on the deployment remains premature, citing multiple preconditions including the cessation of hostilities by all parties, compliance with international law, and approval from Germany’s federal parliament. He stressed that any German naval involvement would be solely for “ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz” and not to “send a political signal.” Pistorius concluded: “This is not our war, but we are affected by its consequences.”
