EU Imposes Gold Trade Sanctions on Sudan on Monday, Following Dutch and French Initiative

The European Union approved new trade sanctions on Sudan's gold industry on Monday (July 7), following an initiative led by the Netherlands and France. The measures include an import ban on Sudanese gold and restrictions on exporting cyanide and mercury to the country.

The sanctions also limit Sudan's ability to transport gold into the EU through third countries. The decision comes as Sudan's internal conflict enters its fourth year.
