Gate News update, April 5, Anthropic has filed documents with the U.S. Federal Election Commission (FEC) to seek the establishment of a staff-funded political action committee called AnthroPAC. The backdrop is that the company is currently in a dispute with the Trump administration over its AI model Claude being used for military purposes. Previously, Anthropic rejected the Pentagon’s request to remove protections designed to prevent the system from being used for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons. In March this year, Anthropic sued the federal government, arguing that it had been listed as a national security supply chain risk, and in the recent ruling the court has ordered a stay of execution of that determination. Currently, major tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have all set up similar political action committees. In addition, in 2026, Anthropic donated $20 million to the organization Public First Action, which supports AI safety safeguards.
