Gate News message, April 16 — Multiple major UK airports have cancelled flights due to a pilot strike over pension disputes on Thursday, April 16, with disruptions expected to continue into Friday, April 17. German airline employees at affected airports have ceased work amid ongoing negotiations with employers.
Edinburgh Airport cancelled four flights to Germany, including three to Frankfurt (scheduled for 6:10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6:20 p.m.) and one to Munich at 5:10 p.m. Manchester Airport reported four cancelled departures and four cancelled arrivals. Glasgow Airport also saw flights cancelled. The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit initiated the dispute.
Andreas Pinheiro, the union’s president, stated: “The situation remains unchanged; there is absolutely no movement on the employers’ side. For us, this is not about political power struggles or egos, but about sustainable solutions.” Lufthansa and Eurowings acknowledged that despite efforts to minimize passenger impact, flight cancellations are unavoidable, and urged travelers to check flight status before departure.
