Gate News message, April 16 — Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the Trump administration should establish a direct communication channel with China on AI development rather than attempt to isolate Beijing, during a Wednesday interview on the Dwarkesh Podcast. Huang noted that the computational capacity required to train systems like Anthropic’s Mythos is already widely available in China, and emphasized that China manufactures approximately 60% of the world’s mainstream chips, making isolation impractical.
Huang argued that American and Chinese AI researchers should maintain dialogue and work toward agreements on AI safety and ethical use cases. He warned against splitting the open-source ecosystem from the American technology stack, calling such a scenario “extremely foolish” and “a horrible outcome for the United States.” Instead, Huang advocated for a global AI development model built on the American tech stack, with researchers worldwide contributing advances back to the U.S. system. He also highlighted energy constraints as a critical bottleneck for AI infrastructure expansion in the United States.
Huang’s comments come as U.S. lawmakers have proposed legislation to tighten China’s access to advanced chipmaking equipment by coordinating export controls with allies including the Netherlands and Japan within 150 days. The U.S. previously launched the Genesis Mission, a national AI initiative led by the Department of Energy and 17 national laboratories, to develop integrated AI platforms using federal scientific datasets.
