Hanoi Targets Full Electric Bus Fleet by 2030

CryptoFrontier

Hanoi plans to shift its entire public bus fleet to electric and other cleaner vehicles by 2030, according to Vietnam News. The city will set policies and build infrastructure in 2025 and 2026, then phase out fossil fuel buses from 2027 to 2030. Green buses are projected to make up 79% to 89% of the fleet by 2029.

Current Progress and Support Measures

Hanoi launched 10 new electric bus routes with 288 vehicles in early April. The city expects 822 electric and clean fuel buses to be in service by April 30, equal to more than 42% of its fleet.

To accelerate the transition, Hanoi has raised interest subsidies on loans for electric bus and infrastructure projects to 70% from 50%. The plan also includes higher loan subsidies, more charging stations, and an expanded electric bus network.

Implementation Timeline

The transition follows a structured schedule: infrastructure and policy development in 2025–2026, followed by a phased phase-out of fossil fuel buses from 2027 to 2030, with the target completion by the end of 2030.

If the electricity structure still leans toward coal, the emission reduction effect will be compromised; it is best to combine it with renewable energy sources.

I am more concerned about the endurance performance during extreme heat and the rainy season, as well as the replacement cost after battery degradation.

Vietnam's current wave of electric buses is quite hardcore.

Don't forget the fate of second-hand diesel buses; disposal after decommissioning and spillover pollution also require policy safeguards.

This plan is quite similar to a city-level "energy + transportation" collaborative upgrade, which can later drive the supply chain and employment.

Electric buses are quieter in the city center, accelerate smoothly, and truly feel much better than diesel vehicles.

I hope it's not just about changing cars without improving service; the frequency, punctuality, and fare system should also keep up.

If we can digitize scheduling and implement peak-valley charging, the overall operating costs might also decrease.
