Google Gemini CLI Next Week Tightens Policy: Free Users Limited to Flash Model, Cracks Down on OAuth Abuse

Gate News reports that on March 19, Gemini CLI product lead and Google Developer Experience Senior Product Director Ryan J. Salva announced service updates on GitHub, introducing three policy adjustments effective March 25.

The specific changes include: 1. Free users will lose access to the Pro model and can only use the Gemini Flash model. Access to the Pro model requires subscribing to Google AI’s paid plans (AI Pro starting at $19.99/month, AI Ultra at $249.99/month); 2. Traffic will be prioritized based on license type and account status, and during peak times, some users may experience capacity limits; 3. An upgraded abuse detection mechanism will focus on cracking down on behaviors such as accessing third-party software via Gemini CLI OAuth authentication. Violating accounts will be flagged.

Previously, Gemini CLI was popular for offering free access to the Pro model, with many third-party tools leveraging OAuth authentication to obtain free quotas. Salva advised developers to acquire their own paid API keys through AI Studio or Vertex AI to manage quotas and billing independently.
