Multiple "Number One in the Nation" achievements! The Provincial Party Secretary and Governor meet with Wang Chuanfu
Ask AI · How can Anhui’s automotive industry achieve a transition from catching up to leading within five years?
According to the April 4 news from “Anhui Daily,” on the afternoon of April 2, Anhui Party Secretary Liang Yanshun and Governor Wang Qingxian held a working meeting in Hefei with Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Co., Ltd.
Liang Yanshun said he hopes BYD will promote more new technologies and new products to be deployed in Anhui, deepening cooperation in complete vehicle manufacturing, battery research and development, megawatt fast charging applications, and other areas.
In recent years, Anhui’s automotive industry has shown a strong development momentum.
By 2025, Anhui will have achieved multiple “national firsts.”
Last year, Anhui’s total vehicle production reached 3.6865 million units, with new energy vehicles totaling 1.7941 million units, accounting for 10.68% and 10.79% of the national share respectively, marking the first time the annual output has risen to the top nationwide; throughout the year, Anhui exported 1.23M vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 28.7%, continuing to lead nationwide, and becoming the first province in the country to export over one million vehicles annually.
An annual output of 3.6865 million vehicles means that for every 9 vehicles produced nationwide, 1 comes from Anhui, with over 10,000 vehicles rolling off production lines daily from various manufacturing bases.
In 2020, Anhui’s automotive and new energy vehicle outputs were 105k and 105k units respectively, ranking 8th and 4th nationwide. Over five years, Anhui has achieved a leap from “following” to “leading.”
Anhui’s “overtaking on curves” cannot be separated from forward-looking policy planning and continuous efforts.
In July 2023, the Fifth Plenary Session of the 11th Anhui Provincial Committee explicitly listed the automotive industry as the province’s “first pillar industry,” requiring the entire province to focus on the comprehensive development of complete vehicles, parts, and aftermarket services—the “three-in-one” approach. Subsequently, Anhui established a provincial automotive office. By the end of 2023, Anhui also introduced the country’s first provincial-level legislation specifically for the new energy vehicle industry—the “Anhui Province New Energy Vehicle Industry Cluster Development Regulations.”
Entering the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, Anhui aims to vigorously develop ten emerging industries, with the top priority being intelligent connected new energy vehicles.
Additionally, this year’s Anhui Provincial Government Work Report mentioned, “Consolidate and enhance the competitive advantage of the automotive industry, accelerate the integrated development of R&D, complete vehicles, parts, and aftermarket services, support key enterprises in building collaborative innovation platforms, and create internationally influential smart vehicle technology and industry innovation centers.”
The clustering of leading enterprises is another key support for Anhui’s automotive industry rise.
In 2020, Volkswagen Anhui Co., Ltd. (formerly JAC Volkswagen) was established, marking Volkswagen Group’s first joint venture in China focused on new energy vehicles. The same year, NIO’s China headquarters settled in Hefei. In 2021, Hefei BYD Auto Co., Ltd. was registered.
Currently, Anhui has gathered seven vehicle companies: Chery Group, NIO, Volkswagen Anhui, Hefei BYD, Jiangxi Motor Group, Hefei Changan, and Hanma Technology, forming a complete industry chain covering passenger cars, commercial vehicles, special vehicles, and more, with well-developed supporting facilities.
Among them, BYD is headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, and is a Fortune Global 500 company listed in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, with businesses spanning four industries: automotive, electronics, new energy, and rail transit.
Data shows that by 2025, BYD aims to achieve sales of 4.6024 million units, a year-on-year increase of 7.73%. Among these, pure electric vehicle sales will reach 2.26 million units, surpassing Tesla for the first time to become the world’s top seller of pure electric vehicles; the annual vehicle export volume will break through 1 million units for the first time, with a 1.4-fold increase year-on-year.
A noteworthy detail is that, despite the development of electric vehicle technology, range anxiety remains one of the unresolved pain points. During this meeting, Liang Yanshun expressed hope that BYD will “deepen cooperation in complete vehicle manufacturing, battery R&D, and megawatt fast charging applications.”
“Megawatt fast charging” technology was precisely what BYD announced last year.
At that time, Wang Chuanfu stated that this technology can achieve a maximum charging voltage of 1000V, a maximum charging current of 1000A, a maximum charging rate of 10C, a maximum charging power of 1MW, and a peak charging speed of 2 kilometers per second. It can charge 407 kilometers in 5 minutes. Meanwhile, BYD plans to build over 4,000 “megawatt fast charging stations.”
In this meeting, Wang Chuanfu said that BYD will increase investment and layout efforts, promote project quality and efficiency, and make positive contributions to the comprehensive development of a beautiful Anhui.
With the continuous deepening of government-enterprise collaboration, Anhui is expected to further consolidate and expand its nationwide leading advantage in the automotive sector.
