CryptoWorld News reports, citing CoinDesk, that Jesse Pollak of Coinbase said the rapid rise of AI agents is reshaping online payment methods, with crypto infrastructure becoming a natural fit. He pointed out that “things that were almost impossible nine months ago are now completely possible,” and emphasized that these agents need native transaction capabilities. Pollak revealed that Coinbase and partners including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard are developing an open-source payment protocol called x402, which enables on-demand API payments without subscriptions or traditional billing systems. Payments based on blockchain allow agents to “make global real-time transfers almost for free through a single API call or smart contract invocation.” Pollak also mentioned that x402 has already processed about $48 million in payment volume, with 95% of transactions occurring on the Ethereum Layer 2 network Base, which he founded and Coinbase incubated.
