#US-IranTalksStall #US-IranTalksStall as Diplomacy Hits Deadlock Over Sanctions and Nuclear Demands
Attempts to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement have hit another roadblock, with the latest round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran ending without a breakthrough.
Negotiations in Vienna and Muscat have stalled primarily over two core issues: the scope of sanctions relief demanded by Tehran and the verifiable limits Washington insists must be placed on Iran’s uranium enrichment program.
Iranian state media reported that US proposals fell short of guaranteeing permanent economic benefits, while American officials accused Tehran of introducing “extraneous demands” unrelated to the original Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“We are not close to an understanding,” a senior State Department official told reporters on condition of anonymity. “Iran continues to advance its nuclear program while walking back from commitments it had previously agreed to.”
Tehran’s Supreme National Security Council countered that Washington has failed to provide reliable assurances for a long-term deal. “The other party wants symbols; we want substance. Until economic realities change on the ground, talks cannot move forward,” an Iranian negotiator posted on social media.
With both sides blaming the other for the impasse, analysts warn that the window for a renewed agreement is rapidly closing. Meanwhile, the IAEA reports that Iran’s stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% purity—just a technical step from weapons-grade—has continued to grow.
For now, diplomatic channels remain technically open, but no new talks have been scheduled, leaving the region in a state of tense uncertainty.
