According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, commercial electricity use will exceed residential consumption for the first time in 2026, with commercial demand reaching 1.550 trillion kilowatt-hours versus 1.508 trillion for residential. The EIA, in its forecast released on July 7, attributes the shift to rapid expansion of AI data centers and electrification of heating and transportation. Total U.S. electricity consumption is projected to reach 4.269 trillion kWh in 2026 and 4.399 trillion kWh in 2027, both record highs.
