South Korean Retail Investors Face 56.3 Trillion Won Loss in Leveraged ETFs on July 29, Citi Warns

According to Citi analyst Mohamed Abaday, individual investors in South Korea have incurred estimated losses of approximately 56.3 trillion won (about $38.7 billion) in leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) following the recent market decline on July 29. The losses stem from leveraged ETF asset values declining from a peak of about $52.5 billion on June 22 to approximately $27.64 billion recently. SK Hynix leveraged ETF holdings experienced the largest decline, losing about 24.74 trillion won in value, while Kospi 200 and Samsung Electronics leveraged ETFs declined by 15.28 trillion won and 7.28 trillion won respectively. Abaday cautioned that retail investors have not yet begun panic selling, and warned that leveraged ETF assets may fall further to below 1.16 trillion won before year-end.
