SK Hynix and partners recently announced an in-memory computing (IMC) SoC chip based on memristors that achieves 21.3 TOPS/W at 100MHz, about ten times more energy-efficient than Nvidia A100 INT8 mode, according to research published in Advanced Intelligent Systems. The 65-nanometer chip also reaches 11.9 TOPS/W at 400MHz and delivers 80.36% accuracy on MobileNetV1Small inference tasks.

Researchers noted the breakthrough is currently a proof-of-concept with limited peak throughput of just 2.54 TOPS, insufficient for mainstream edge AI platforms. However, the low-power profile offers significant potential for wearable and IoT devices where energy consumption is critical.
