Over 200 Experts Warn of AI Economic Shock, Signal Humans May Have Only Years to Prepare

According to a joint statement released on July 14, more than 200 researchers and economists, including 15 Nobel laureates and researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, have urged governments and tech leaders to immediately establish policies and institutions to address the potential economic impact of artificial intelligence.

The statement warns that AI could trigger an economic transformation rivaling or exceeding the scale of the Industrial Revolution, but the timeframe for adjustment is dramatically compressed. Virginia professor Anton Korinek noted that major technological breakthroughs like steam power, electricity, and computers each gave societies decades to adapt, while AI may leave humanity with only a few years.
