Japan Discovers Rare Earth Elements Near Minami-Tori Island, Plans Extraction Tests in February 2027

According to Japan's public broadcasters, exploration ships on July 24 recovered seabed mud from approximately 5,600 meters depth near Minami-Tori Island, containing 17 rare earth elements. Yttrium, used in semiconductor equipment and jet engine components, comprises about 30 percent of the sample, while neodymium, essential for electric vehicle motors and high-performance permanent magnets, accounts for approximately 20 percent. Japan plans to conduct a one-month mining test starting in February 2027 to assess commercial viability.
