Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially with the December payments coming up. The process is actually quite different depending on which grant you're on, which catches most people off guard.

If you're getting a permanent grant like old age or disability, you basically have to go in person to your local SASSA office to change your bank details. They won't let you do it online, which is annoying but that's how it works. You need your original ID and proof of your new bank account, usually a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from the bank. They'll fill out the Payment Method Change Form, send it to the bank for verification, and that can take up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.

Now if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually way easier because everything's online. You go to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. That's where you update your banking details. Same rule though, the account has to be in your name only. No joint accounts or anything.

For updating your phone number, permanent grant holders should call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. SRD users can do it through the online portal but you'll get an OTP sent to verify. The whole thing can take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks depending on the bank's verification process.

One thing everyone needs to remember: don't use random websites claiming to update your SASSA details. Stick to the official portal. There's a lot of fake sites out there trying to steal people's information.
