Just sorted out my SASSA banking details update and honestly, the process is a bit different depending on which grant you're getting. If you're on the SRD R370, it's actually pretty straightforward online - you just go to their portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS to verify everything. Takes a few days to process though, so don't expect it to happen overnight.
But here's the thing - if you're on permanent grants like disability or child support, you can't do it online at all. You have to go physically to your SASSA office and fill out forms in person. They need to see your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works), and they'll verify it takes up to 21 days. The tricky part is timing - if you want the change to take effect next month, you need to submit before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
One thing I learned: the account has to be in YOUR name only. No joint accounts, no third-party stuff. Also, if you're using the money transfer option instead of bank payment, your phone number needs to be RICA-registered. For updating your cellphone number on SRD, same deal - portal, ID number, application ID if you have it, then they send an OTP to confirm. The helpline is 0800 60 10 11 if you get stuck, but honestly the online portal for SRD is pretty solid. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website, not some random link floating around.
