Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially if you're on the SRD grant. The process is actually quite different depending on which type of grant you're getting.
So if you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you basically have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. They won't let you change banking details online for those - you need to fill out their Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID and proof of your new bank account (like a recent bank statement), and then it takes up to 21 working days for the banks to verify everything. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
But here's the thing - if you're on SRD, it's totally different. You can update cellphone number on SRD through their online portal, which is actually way easier. They send you an SMS link, you click it, enter your new number, and boom - done. The banking details update works similarly online too. Just make sure whatever account you're using is registered in YOUR name, because SASSA won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that.
Word of warning though: there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA trying to get your info. Always use the official portal and never trust random links. If you're struggling with the online process, just call their helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit an office in person. Takes longer but at least you know it's legit.
