So Musk finally shipped XChat to the App Store back in April 2024. Been following this whole 'Western WeChat' thing since he took over Twitter in late 2022, and honestly it took way longer than I expected. They had the app in testing for almost a year before the official launch. The thing is supposed to have end-to-end encryption, zero ads, and no tracking - basically everything that makes WeChat actually work for people. From the time Musk announced the vision to actually getting it live, we're talking almost four years. Pretty wild that it took this long just to launch a messaging app, but I guess building something that actually competes with WeChat isn't as simple as it sounds. Curious if Musk's version actually gains traction or if it stays niche.
