Shock in the AI World: Anthropic Accidentally Leaks 500,000 Lines of Source Code for Claude Code Tool

On March 31, 2026, the AI company Anthropic accidentally leaked over 500,000 lines of source code for its popular coding assistant Claude Code's command-line tool (CLI), causing a major shock in the technology world. The incident was recorded as a packaging issue resulting entirely from human error, rather than a cyberattack or security breach.

How Did the Leak Occur?

It all began with the release of npm package 2.1.88 for the Claude Code tool. A 59.8 MB "source map" file, used in the development process and not normally intended for end-user use, was accidentally included during packaging. This file contained all of the tool's original TypeScript source code, developer comments, and even hidden features that had not yet been released.

The bug was first discovered by Chinese security researcher Chaofan Shou, who shared his findings on social media. Within seconds, the code was copied and spread to various platforms. Although Anthropic immediately withdrew the package and began issuing copyright infringement notices, it was too late.

What Was Leaked, What Remained Safe?

While the scale of the leak is considerable, a critical distinction needs to be made:

Leaked: The agency architecture, task scheduling logic, memory management system, and many new features not yet seen by users, which can be considered the brain of Claude Code. In total, over 512,000 lines of code in approximately 2,000 files were made public.

Buddy: A Tamagotchi-style AI "pet" that appears in the terminal while coding. This feature gamifies the coding process by reacting to the developer's actions and includes types with varying rarity levels.
KAIROS: An autonomous agent that constantly works in the background. Even when the user is not working, it analyzes the project, optimizes memory, and can independently perform long-term planning tasks.
Undercover Mode: An ironic feature designed to erase any traces of Anthropic employees using AI while contributing to open-source projects.
Anti-Distillation Protections: "Poisoning" mechanisms designed to prevent rival AI models from copying the working logic of Claude Code.

What Will the Effects Be?

This leak represents a significant reputational blow for Anthropic, but it could be a turning point for the AI industry. Competitors (such as Cursor, Devin, and Aider) now have the opportunity to directly examine Claude Code's advanced agent architecture and integrate similar technologies into their own products. Furthermore, knowing the details of the leaked code opens the door for malicious actors to create counterfeit packages and launch supply chain attacks against developers.

Anthropic has confirmed that the incident was a packaging error and that no customer data was leaked. However, this event highlights the complexity and value of AI agent technology developed behind closed doors, demonstrating the enormous consequences of a moment of carelessness.
