# Appearance Follows Heart, Environment Transforms with Mind
In ancient China, virtually all people of great virtue and profound learning possessed the ability to read character through physiognomy. This is because when a person's moral character, wisdom, and cultivation reach a certain level, understanding becomes universal. One can see through eight or nine parts of others' hearts—whether good or evil, whether honest or deceitful, and whether their fate leads to poverty or wealth—at a single glance.
The well-known Zeng Guofan, whom everyone is familiar with, even left behind a specialized treatise on reading people called "The Art of Understanding Physiognomy" (冰鉴). In fact, it wasn't only Zeng Guofan—many sages and wise figures throughout history possessed this ability. This is not some mysterious and unfathomable secret art. Rather, it is because: no matter how well you disguise yourself, your facial features have already revealed everything about you.
As the saying goes: three inches of nose cannot compare to seven feet of body; seven feet of body cannot compare to one inch of heart. What truly determines a person's fortune or misfortune has never been external appearance, but your inner heart.
What makes this even more remarkable is that a person's appearance constantly changes with their thoughts.
With heart but no appearance, appearance follows the heart's birth; with appearance but no heart, appearance follows the heart's extinction.
Confucius said: "The gentleman does not divine."
This doesn't mean he didn't understand divination, but rather that it was fundamentally unnecessary.
The art of reading people lies in observing the heart:
To observe people at their lowest, first listen to their voice; before hearing their voice, first observe their actions; in observing actions, one perceives the heart.
The way you speak, conduct affairs, and harbor thoughts has already determined your appearance, and has destined your life's blessings and fortune. Thus, why seek guidance from gods or divination?
There is no appearance beyond the heart; appearance arises from the heart.
Fortune and misfortune, wealth and poverty, all lie within one's own heart;
All karmic fields do not extend beyond the span of one's palm.
The most beautiful appearance in this world has always been a heart that is luminous, upright, and compassionate.
