Ethereum’s New Dawn: Vitalik Buterin’s Scaling Vision and the 2026 Roadmap
As of 2026, the Ethereum ecosystem is witnessing one of the most critical architectural transformations in its history. The new scaling strategy recently outlined by co-founder Vitalik Buterin aims not only to increase the network’s capacity but also to fundamentally overhaul its core operational principles in line with modern cryptographic needs. This new era carries the promise of transforming Ethereum from a cumbersome structure into a global settlement layer capable of securely processing hundreds of thousands of transactions per second.
Short-Term Objective: The Glamsterdam Upgrade and Execution Efficiency
The first phase of Buterin’s plan focuses on a major upgrade dubbed “Glamsterdam,” expected to go live in the first half of 2026. During this stage, revolutionary steps are being taken to eliminate bottlenecks on the network’s execution layer.
Parallel Transaction Verification: Thanks to block-level access lists, the way is being paved for transactions to be verified simultaneously rather than sequentially. This ensures much more efficient utilization of hardware resources.
ePBS (Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation): This protocol reduces centralization risks in the block production process, enhancing the network’s censorship resistance while optimizing data processing windows.
Massive Increase in Gas Limits: With the targeted new structure, the gas limit per block is planned to be raised above 100 million. This will directly increase the mainnet’s transaction capacity while lowering the costs of complex smart contracts.
Long-Term Architecture: Binary Tree Structure and RISC-V Transition
Vitalik Buterin aims to make Ethereum fully compatible with Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) by changing the network’s state storage format. The transition from the current hexary structure to a Binary Merkle Tree structure will reduce data sizes and increase proving efficiency by three to four times.
An even more ambitious step is the gradual replacement of the Ethereum Virtual Machine with a new RISC-V based architecture. This shift will enhance Ethereum’s provability, allowing even mobile devices to securely perform verification as a full node on the network.
The Evolving Relationship Between Layer 2 (L2) and the Mainnet
This 2026 vision empowers Layer 2 solutions such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon rather than excluding them. According to Buterin, the Ethereum mainnet is no longer just a transaction platform; it is becoming a massive security and data continuity harbor upon which L2s are built. By expanding the use of data blobs, L2 fees are expected to drop to almost symbolic levels, enabling the ecosystem as a whole to support millions of transactions per second.
These strategic moves stand out as Ethereum’s greatest advantage, distinguishing it from competitors and positioning it not just as a financial tool, but as the next-generation infrastructure of the internet.
