Sagrada Familia has completed the exterior of the main tower in Barcelona
Barcelona’s architectural masterpiece has reached an important milestone in its centuries-long history. According to Ming Pao, the construction team successfully installed the final element—the three-dimensional cross—on top of the Tower of Jesus, which rises 172.5 meters above the ground. This moment marked the completion of the exterior shell of one of the most recognizable structures on the planet.
The Culmination of Work: Installing the Cross Above the Sanctuary
The installation of the cross in recent days was the result of coordinated efforts by engineers and craftsmen who carefully prepared this final phase of façade work. The height of 172.5 meters allowed the basilica to become the tallest church in the world, surpassing many historic sanctuaries. The Tower of Jesus, originally designed by Antoni Gaudí, is the fourteenth of eighteen planned towers in the complex.
A Century-Long Journey from Concept to Reality
When Gaudí died in 1926, only one tower was completed. Decades later, his vision has gradually become a reality—slowly but surely. Each of the 18 towers holds symbolic significance in Christian architecture, and the overall design transforms the building into a stone Bible. Today’s achievement is a testament to the dedication to preserving the legacy of one of the greatest architects of the 20th century.
On the Verge of Opening: Interior Decoration and Public Access
While the façade of the main tower is finished, the interior continues to develop actively. The basilica has scheduled its official opening for June 10, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death. This is not just an architectural monument—it’s a living museum of creativity, where every element tells a story of faith, art, and human perseverance embodied in stone and iron.
