Super-scale data center operator AirTrunk has raised a green loan of ¥191.6 billion (approximately $1.24 billion USD) to refinance and expand the TOK1 data center campus in the Tokyo area, marking the largest data center financing deal ever completed in Japan.
The loan will support the next development phases of the TOK1 project, aiming to expand capacity beyond 300 MW to meet the growing demand for cloud computing services and AI infrastructure in Japan. AirTrunk has announced it has begun building an additional 100 MW of IT load to serve short-term needs from technology and cloud customers.
The financing was arranged by a consortium of 12 banks, led by SMBC, MUFG, Crédit Agricole CIB, and Société Générale. The deal is part of the Green Financing Framework, which requires facilities to meet strict energy efficiency standards to reduce electricity consumption and emissions. AirTrunk has already invested over $8 billion USD in data center infrastructure in Japan.
