US Military Introduces Ukrainian Anti-Drone System at Saudi Base, Exposing Air Defense Shortcomings
On April 22, Reuters reported, citing multiple informed sources, that the US military has deployed the Ukrainian-developed anti-drone command system Sky Map at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, with on-site training provided by Ukrainian personnel. This system has been widely used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and can integrate radar and multi-source sensor data to detect, identify, and intercept incoming drones. The report noted that the base has been targeted multiple times by drone and missile attacks since the outbreak of the conflict, resulting in damage to critical equipment and casualties, highlighting the US military’s inadequate capabilities in addressing low-cost drone threats. The introduction of Ukrainian combat technology is seen as a measure for the US military to accelerate its efforts to fill gaps in the anti-drone domain. Analysts believe that as drones are increasingly utilized in modern warfare, traditional air defense systems are facing structural challenges, and there is currently no universal solution that can comprehensively cover all types of threats.
