Pakistan Evacuates 792 Citizens from Iran

(MENAFN) Pakistan has evacuated 792 of its citizens from Iran, with key border crossings between the two countries remaining open and operational, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told lawmakers Tuesday.

Addressing the Senate on the rapidly evolving situation in Iran, Dar confirmed that the Taftan crossing on the Pakistani side and the Zahedan crossing on the Iranian side were both fully functional.

“We have repatriated 792 Pakistani nationals from Iran,” Dar told senators, disclosing that 46 students were among those brought home.

To ease the return of citizens caught without valid documentation, Iranian authorities have been issuing visas at the border to Pakistani nationals who arrived without the required paperwork, Dar said, adding that the government was exerting every effort to ensure the safe return of its people.

Before hostilities escalated, approximately 35,000 Pakistanis were present in Iran. Islamabad is also in active contact with Azerbaijan to arrange an alternative exit route for Pakistani nationals stranded in northern Iran, who could potentially cross into Baku if circumstances demand it, Dar said.

On the diplomatic front, Dar noted that Pakistan had positioned itself as a potential mediator between Washington and Tehran and was continuing to pursue a negotiated resolution through diplomatic channels.
