Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Kidney Disease
1. Kidney Essence Deficiency
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the kidney governs the storage of essence. Kidney essence deficiency is fundamental and manifests as insufficiency of the marrow sea: brain dizziness, tinnitus, neck soreness, vertigo, vision loss, and lethargy with a desire to lie down. Zhang Jingyue's Da Bu Yuan Jian is a basic formula for kidney essence deficiency, composed of Rehmannia glutinosa, Chinese yam, Cornus officinalis, Goji berries, Angelica sinensis, Eucommia, Ginseng, and roasted licorice.
2. Yang Deficiency
Kidney essence deficiency can transform into Yang deficiency, characterized by symptoms such as cold stomach, cold limbs, cold extremities, fatigue, and decreased desire. Zhang Zhongjing's Tianxiong San can be used for Yang deficiency, with Aconite and Cinnamon Twig warming the kidney Yang, gently generating fire to produce kidney Qi, and preventing the drying out of kidney essence.
3. Yin Deficiency
Kidney essence deficiency can also transform into Yin deficiency, presenting as irritability, hot palms and soles, sweating with a feeling of heat, red tongue with dry mouth, and a thin rapid pulse. Zhu Danxi's Da Bu Yin Wan can be used for Yin deficiency, with Rehmannia glutinosa and turtle shell nourishing Yin, and Anemarrhena asphodeloides and Phellodendron clearing fire.
4. Heart-Kidney Disharmony
Kidney essence deficiency can lead to disharmony between the heart and kidneys, manifesting as excessive heart fire (irritability, insomnia, palpitations) and insufficient kidney water (coolness at the base of the spine). Kong Sheng Zhen Zhong Dan can facilitate communication between the heart and kidneys, composed of Calamus, Polygala, Dragon Bone, and Turtle Shell. Calamus calms the mind, Polygala tonifies the kidneys, Dragon Bone calms the spirit, and Turtle Shell nourishes the liver and kidneys.
5. Liver-Kidney Yin Deficiency
The kidney is the mother of the liver; kidney essence deficiency can lead to insufficient liver blood, resulting in Liver-Kidney Yin deficiency, with symptoms such as menopausal symptoms (irregular menstruation, hot flashes, sweating, irritability), and liver Qi stagnation. He Shou Wu (prepared), soothing the liver and nourishing the kidneys, Angelica sinensis nourishing blood, or using Sini San (Chai Hu, Bai Shao, Zhi Zhi, Licorice) to soothe the liver, combined with Da Bu Yuan Jian.
6. Lung-Kidney Yin Deficiency
The kidney is the mother of the lung; kidney essence deficiency can cause Lung-Kidney Yin deficiency, characterized by chronic cough and asthma (weak asthma, no sputum, shortness of breath). Ren Shen Ge Jie San can be used, consisting of Ginseng (tonifies lung Qi) and Kudzu root (tonifies kidney Qi), or with added Anemarrhena asphodeloides, Fritillaria, Poria, Apricot kernel, and Mulberry bark to regulate the lungs.
7. Spleen-Kidney Dual Deficiency
The kidney is the congenital foundation, and the spleen is the acquired foundation. Dual deficiency of spleen and kidney manifests as kidney essence deficiency symptoms plus spleen deficiency (poor digestion, fatigue, muscle atrophy, loss of appetite). Add Huang Qi, Ginseng, and roasted licorice to tonify Qi, or combine with White Atractylodes and Zhi Sheng Ma to form Ju Yuan Jian, strengthening the spleen and nourishing the kidneys.
